FAQs
What is the difference between Staging and Interior Decorating?
I wear two different hats, depending on the goal.
When helping clients sell their home, we remove many personal items—like photographs and diplomas—so buyers can focus on the house itself and imagine living there. Thoughtful presentation attracts a broader pool of buyers and can lead to higher offers.
On the other hand, Interior Decorating is about making a home your own, reflecting your personality and unique style. In short: Staging is depersonalizing (with heart), while Interior Decorating is personalizing and customizing.
Why stage in a hot sellers’ market?
Even in a hot market, staging gives your property a competitive edge. While homes may sell quickly, staged homes attract more buyers, generate stronger offers, and can increase the final sale price. Staging helps buyers connect emotionally, envision themselves living there, and see the home’s full potential—so your property stands out and commands top dollar.
What are the most important rooms to stage?
Here are the five rooms buyer’s agents believe are the most important for buyers to see staged:
Living room
Primary bedroom
Kitchen
Dining room
Outdoor space
Should I de-clutter inside the closets?
Yes! Clear out closets, garages, and storage areas to minimize distractions. Overstuffed spaces make buyers think there is not enough storage. Keep only what’s necessary, and pack, sell, or donate the rest so buyers can focus on your home’s potential.
Do we need to be out of the house while the house is being staged?
To get the most out of the professional staging service, it is best to leave while we are working; it allows us to be efficient and focused. I tell my clients: “It gets messy before it’s perfect; it is a creative approach that needs space and time to come together.”
